PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND?

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

While holiday messages of peace are broadcast everywhere during this time of Christmas and Hanukkah – the sad truth about the Land of Israel is that in spite of a measure of prosperity and growth during this past year, and in spite of the withdrawal of Israeli families from the Gaza Strip, and in spite of the “elections” in Palestinian territories, and in spite of huge financial contributions to the Palestinian Authority from the European Union and the USA, and in spite of a spectacular growth in tourism, and in spite of a resurging “Aliyah” (return) of Jewish families to Eretz Yisrael (even from North America!) – the facts are that terrorism continues and increased threats now happen daily!

As a regular part of the “prayers” offered in Muslim mosques all over the Middle East, the call to prayer now includes a prayer for Allah to destroy the United States of America and to annihilate Israel! This is peace?

During the final days of this year (2005) we have heard and read of the increased hostility of Islamic regimes and terrorist leaders toward Israel. They are arming themselves with more serious and dangerous weapons. The rockets and missiles they now possess are capable of striking deep within Israeli cities and doing extensive damage.

The upheaval continues in the political environment of Israel. Prime Minister Sharon’s recent “mild stroke” is now leading to open heart surgery. His new Kadima party appears to be committed to the “Road Map” that proposes a Palestinian State and a divided Jerusalem. Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working hard to “clean up” corruption in the Likud Party of which he is now the elected leader. Netanyahu is taking a stand against Sharon’s policies. As a foremost authority on the subject of terrorism (has written an excellent book on the subject) Netanyahu is well aware of what recent policies of the government is causing – an increase in terrorism and a stronger desire to destroy the State of Israel. The situation is a far cry from true and lasting PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND!

Israeli Defense Forces have struck hard and frequently at terrorist strongholds in northern Gaza. The Palestinian Authority is behind a great deal of the recent attacks. Mahmound Abbas was in attendance at a mosque where the prayers for the destruction of Israel and a resuming of the attacks against Israeli citizens and a continual barrage of hatred toward Jewish people (calling them “dogs” and “pigs” and other unmentionable things!) was “preached” to thousands of Muslims. This is worship? This is peace?

Steven Spielberg’s newly-released movie “MUNICH” is quite timely. Though I have not seen the movie as yet, it is the story of the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, when the Israeli athletes were killed by terrorists. I understand that the movie does not mention the “mastermind” behind that terrorist tragedy – it has come to our attention that Abu Mazen or Mahmoud Abbas, the current “President” of the Palestinian Authority was one of the planners of this terrible tragedy. I remember it well. We had a tour to Israel that was completing on that tragic night. We were in Athens and scheduled to fly over the lights of the Olympic Village in Munich – it was advertized on the billboard of the flights from Athens. We had a charter plane of about 250 people. It was scheduled to fly over the Olympic Village at approximately the same early morning hour when the Israeli athletes were killed. We had a passenger on our plane who did not belong to our group. Upon investigation (he had no passport or ticket) of this Middle Eastern man he was discovered that as a terrorist he intended to “blow up” the plane as a diversion that morning. It was quite a night (to say the least)! Seeing the advertisment of the new movie has brought it all back from the memories of the past. It reminds me of the message that the people of Israel need to hear – the LORD GOD of ISRAEL is your strong Defence, Fortress, Protector, and Deliverer! He has NEVER forsaken you, and will NOT cancel His everlasting and unconditional covenant with you and His land!

MAY THE PRINCE OF PEACE RETURN SOON AND BRING PEACE TO THIS VERY TROUBLED WORLD!

WATCH AND BE READY!

THE BIRTH OF MESSIAH

Monday, December 19th, 2005

THE BIRTH OF MESSIAH – Luke 2:1-14

THE PROPHECY OF THE BIRTH OF MESSIAH
Micah 4:8; 5:2 cf. Matthew 2:4-6

THE PROCLAMATION OF CAESAR AUGUSTUS – Luke 2:1-5 – “that all the world should be taxed”

Augustus ruled from 43 BC to 14 AD. (Octavian – grandnephew of Julius Caesar)

Quirinius was “governing” under the governor Varus of Syria at the time of the census mentioned in the Bible (probably around 7 BC) – Luke 2:2
Josephus refers to a census in 6 AD when Quirinius was the governor – Egyptian records state that a census was done by Rome every 14 years, and took several years to accomplish.

Herod the Great was alive at the birth of the Messiah – this problem is related to a remark by Flavius Josephus. Josephus recorded an eclipse on March 13, 4BC which he said was “shortly before Herod died.” However, the actual date of the eclipse was December 29, 1 BC. Time between the birth of the Messiah and Herod’s death is necessary since Joseph and Mary with the baby fled to Egypt and did not return until after Herod’s death. Herod the Great died on January 14, 1 BC.

Tertullian said that the birth of Jesus was 41 years after Augustus began his rule, and died 15 years after the birth. The death of Augustus was August 19, 14 AD. Tertullian also said that Jesus was born 28 years after the death of
Cleopatra who died in 30 BC.

Irenaeus also said that Jesus was born in the 41st year of the reign of Augustus. Eusebius says about the same thing. The 42nd year of Augustus ran from the autumn of 2 BC to the autumn of 1 BC.

The Messiah was probably born on September 29, 2 BC.

When the temple was destroyed by Titus on August 5, 70 AD, the first course of priests had just taken office (24 courses or divisions). The course of Abijah John the Baptist’s father ( Zacharias) was the 8th course – tracing back, Zacharias would have ended his duties on July 13, 3 BC. The birth of John the Baptist would be 280 days later – April 19-20, 2BC (which was Passover that year) – birth of Jesus would have been six months later – fall of 2 BC. The interesting fact of this date is that it is Tishri 1 on the Jewish calendar – Rosh HaShanah – the Feast of Trumpets.

THE PRESENCE OF SHEPHERDS WITH THEIR FLOCKS IN THE FIELDS
Luke 2:8 – It is highly unlikely that shepherds would have their flocks in the fields during the winter cold weather. However, several years ago on a trip to Israel in December I saw shepherds with their flocks in the fields. But, it was not very cold that day so maybe this is a true fact upon which we can relay to a certain degree.

THE PRESENTATION BY THE ANGEL TO THE SHEPHERDS
Luke 2:9-12

The DISPLAY of God’s glory – v. 9

The DESCRIPTION of the good tidings – v. 10 – ”great joy…to all people”

The DESIGNATION of the place – vv. 11, 12 – “in the city of David” and “in a manger”

The DETAILS of the baby’s identity – v. 11 – “a Savior, which is Christ the Lord”

THE PRAISE OF THE HEAVENLY HOST – vv. 13-14

The construction of the Greek text is crucial to what is being said:
In the highest (heaven) – “Glory to God”
On earth – “peace, good will toward men”

The last phrase needs to be translated correctly – “among men with whom He is pleased”

“PEACE” IS RELATED TO THE FOLLOWING:
1. It refers to the Messiah Himself – Isaiah 9:6 – “the Prince of PEACE”
2. It refers to the Messiah’s death – Colossians 1″20 – “having made PEACE through the blood of His cross”
3. It refers to the PEACE we have with God when we become believers in the Person and work of the Messiah – Romans 5:1 – “Therefore being justified by faith, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”
4. It refers to the PEACE which believers have when we pray with thanksgiving and leave matters in the hands of the Lord – Philippians 4:6-7 – “the PEACE of God”
5. It refers to the PEACE of Messiah’s kingdom – Isaiah 9:7 – “Of the increase of His government and PEACE there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom”

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HANUKKAH!

SHOULD JERUSALEM BE DIVIDED?

Friday, December 16th, 2005

News reports from Israel have now said that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon intends to divide Jerusalem and make “East Jerusalem” the capital of a new Palestinian State. This is exactly the opposite of his commitments in the past. The pressure of world leadership (including the United States) is motivating Sharon more than the God of the Bible! Prime Minister Sharon is now denying those reports, but insiders say that this is exactly what he intends to do. There are over 250,000 Jews living in what is called “East Jerusalem.”

We need to return to the God of the Bible and read what He says about Jerusalem. In Psalm 122 we read these words:

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the LORD. For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. PRAY for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.”

Jerusalem is mentioned 811 times in the Bible – not once in the Koran. It is called “Salem” on four occasions. Psalm 76:1-2 says: “In Judah God is known; His Name is great in Israel. In Salem is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion.” The word “Zion” refers to Jerusalem 152 times. It is called the “holy city” and the “city of God.” It is also called the “city of truth” and the “city of the great King” and the “city of Judah” and the “city of David.”

Psalm 46:4 says: “There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.” Psalm 87:1-3 states: “His foundation is in the holy mountains. The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of God.”

Psalm 48:2 calls Jerusalem “the joy of the whole earth, the city of the great King.” Psalm 137:5 refers to it as “my chief joy.” God loves “the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.” II Chronicles 6:6 says: “But I have chosen Jerusalem, that My Name might be there.” Psalm 99:2 adds: “The Lord is great in Zion; and He is high above all the people.” Psalm 132:13-14 makes it very clear as to the importance of Jerusalem in God’s eyes: “For the Lord hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation. This is My rest FOREVER; here will I dwell, for I have desired it.”

The Lord appeared to Solomon upon the completion of building the temple. II Chronicles 7:16 records these words: “For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My Name may be there FOREVER; and Mine eyes and Mine heart shall be there PERPETUALLY.”

Zechariah 12:2-3 predicts that the issue of Jerusalem will become a major issue to the world: “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about” and “in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people.” Zechariah 12:9 says: “I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

According to Zechariah 14:16 Jerusalem is the place to which all nations will come in the future to worship the King, the Lord of hosts.”

JERUSALEM IS THE ETERNAL CAPITAL OF ISRAEL AND SHOULD NEVER BE DIVIDED!

THE END OF “PEACE”?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

It is rather amusing (in a tragic sort of way) to read that the terrorists are going to resume their attacks against Israel after the first of the year! When did they ever stop their attacks? They have been continuing it for some time. This is not any kind of peace going on right now!

Iran is definitely behind Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah. They are funding these terrorists and strategizing with them over how to destroy the State of Israel and remove all Jews from the land they call “Palestine” and God calls the “Land of ISRAEL.” They are encouraging these groups to continue their terrorist attacks and they say that is the real reason why Israel vacated the Gaza Strip. They believe that if they keep up these attacks, Israel will vacate more land, and eventually get out of the land altogether!

The United Nations honored the Palestinian Authority recently and on a large map of the Middle East they did not acknowledge the presence of ISRAEL, but instead called it “Palestine.” When Israeli official protested, all they got was a little remark from Kofi Annan that it was too bad and not very wise!

Make no mistake about anything you read from Iran, or any other Islamic countries of the Middle East! Their goal remains the same – destroy the State of Israel! May God open our eyes and may journalists and political leaders the world over stop calling Israel the “agressor” and “occupier” of land that does not belong to them! What lies and fabrications the terrorists continue to tell!

It is time for the United States to back up its long-standing words of support for the State of Israel, and to voice its objections loudly whether possible, and to support Israel financially and militarily in every way! They have always been our loyal ally in the Middle East!

Genesis 12:3 is still in the BIBLE – God will “bless” those who bless Israel and He will “curse” those who curse her!

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SON OF GOD

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

As most people know, Yeshua (Jesus) is called “the SON of God” in the Bible. Many people ask the question: “If He is the SON of God, then how can He be GOD like many believers say?” Good question.

Muslims say that God has no son, and yet Psalm 2:1-12 clearly teaches otherwise as does Proverbs 30:4.

Angels are called “sons of God” in Job 2:1 in the Old Testament, and believers are called “sons of God” in the New Testament. Israel is called “My son” in Exodus 4:22 and Hosea 11:1. The Messiah is called God’s “son” in Psalm 2:7 and in Daniel 3:19-25 King Nebuchadnezzar refers to a fourth person in the fiery furnace as God’s “angel” and one “like the son of God.”

In Luke 3:38, the genealogy of Mary is traced all the way back to Adam who is called “the son of God.” However, the words “the son” are not in the original Greek text of that verse.

The MEANING of the phrase “SON OF GOD”

It is NOT the word for a child by birth. The Greek word for “a little born one” is “teknos” which is never used of Jesus. It is NOT the word for a child by age. The Greek word “paidia” is never used when we read “the SON of God.” The Greek word for “SON” in the phrase “SON OF GOD” is the Greek word “huios” which means “an heir” – the one who receives the inheritance.

The MANNER in which others referred to the identity of Jesus

Satan himself says in Matthew 4:1-11 – “If Thou be the Son of God” – the “if” clause in Greek literally means “if and it is son” or “since.” The demons say in Matthew 8:28-29 “What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God?” Also, in Mark 3:11, the unclean spirits says “Thou art the Son of God.” In Luke 4:41, the devils says “Thou art the Christ the Son of God.”

The disciples in Matthew 14:22-33 says “Of a truth Thou art the Son of God.” The Jewish High Priest says at the trial of Jesus in Matthew 26:63-65: “I adjure Thee by the living God, that Thou tell us whether Thou be the Christ, the Son of God.” The crowds that passed by his cross when He died are quoted in Matthew 27:39-40 as saying, “If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.” The chief priests, scribes, and elders said in Matthew 27:41-43: “He said, I am the Son of God.” The centurion on His cross said in Matthew 27:54: “Truly this was the Son of God.” John the Baptist in John 1:34 said of Him: “I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God.” Nathanael, one of the disciples, said in John 1:49: “Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel.” Martha said in John 11:27: “I believe that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God.” Simon Peter said in Matthew 16:16: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And the brilliant scholar and rabbi, Saul of Tarsus, preached about the Messiah in various synagogues and said that “He is the Son of God.”

The MESSAGE which we must understand and believe!

It was a PROCLAMATION by the angel Gabriel to Mary in Luke 1:26-35 – “that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” This message of His true identity involves the POWER to raise the dead. John 5:25 says: “the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live.” Jesus Himself said in John 11:4 concerning the sickness of his friend Lazarus: “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”

This message is the PREREQUISITE that is necessary in order to avoid eternal condemnation. John 3:18 states: “he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the Name of the only-begottne Son of God.” It is also the PRIORITY in order for a person to have eternal life! John 20:31 says: “that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life through His Name.” I John 5:11-13 adds: “that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the Name of the Son of God.”

This message is also the PURPOSE for being baptized in water. In Acts 8:34-38 we read the Ethiopian eunuch saying to Philip: “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

This message tells of the High PRIEST Who will help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 says: “Jesus the Son of God.” He is the PERSON Who destroyed the works of the devil. I John 3:8 – “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

This message speaks of the PROFESSION that guarantees our relationship to God and victory over the world. I John 4:15 says: “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” And, I John 5:5 adds: “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

This message about Jesus being the SON of GOD is the PROOF of the true God! I john 5:20 states clearly: “the Son of God is come…this is the true God; and eternal life.” Hebrews 1:8 quotes the Father speaking about His Son: “But unto the Son, He saith, Thy throne, O GOD, is for ever and ever.”

You may not (at this point) believe the Bible’s teachings about the phrase “the SON of GOD” but make no mistake about it – your eternal destiny is dependent upon what you believe and trust concerning the SON OF GOD!

WHAT IS PRETERISM?

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

“Preterism” is a term that comes from Latin and simply means “past.” In religious circles today, the term refers to the belief that all the prophecies of Yeshua (Jesus) in Matthew 24-25, Mark 13, and Luke 21, were fulfilled in 70 AD. Many who hold this particular viewpoint also believe that the entire book of Revelation in the New Testament was written before 70 AD about events that have already taken place in history.

Preterists believe that the promise of our Lord’s Second Coming began to be fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Some believe that the prophecies mentioned above were fulfilled in the Second Century AD at the time of the Second Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire at the time of Emperor Hadrian. Some preterists hold that the prophecies were fulfilled during the first three centuries AD as God wages war on the enemies of the Church (which they argue include Israel and Rome!) resulting in the “Christianization” of the Roman Empire under Constantine.

In the view of many preterists, the Lord returned “spiritually” at the times referred to above, and will return again physically in the future.

Preterists usually believe what is today popularly called “Replacement Theology.” They believe that the Church has replaced Israel and is now the recipient of all of God’s promises and covenants to Israel. They use the term the “people of God” and make no real distinction between believing Israel and the believing Church.

In the literature and books of preterists, you will find the following definitions of prophetic terms and subjects:

THE GREAT TRIBULATION – They believe this took place at the fall of Israel and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. They believe that it will not be repeated and that this term is NOT referring to any future event.

THE LAST DAYS – Preterists believe that this is a Biblical expression for the period of time between Christ’s first coming and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. In other words, they believe the term refers to the last days of Israel.

THE RAPTURE – They believe that this event refers to the catching up of living saints to meet the Lord in the air, and then will immediately return to the earth with Him. In other words the Rapture and the Revelation (Second Coming to the earth) are one and the same event.

THE BEAST OF REVELATION – They believe that it is a symbol of Nero (some hold this view) or of the Roman Empire in general.

THE FALSE PROPHET – They believe that this refers to the leadership of what they call as “apostate Israel” who they say rejected Jesus Christ and worshipped the “Beast” or the Roman Empire.

THE GREAT HARLOT – They believe that this is reference to Jerusalem which fell into apostasy, persecuted the prophets, and cease to be the City of God.

THE MILLENNIUM – Preterists (most of them) say that this refers to the spiritual kingdom of Jesus Christ which He established at His first coming. They say it refers to the period of time between His first and second comings. They believe that the Millennium is going on now with Christians reigning as kings on earth.

ISRAEL – They believe that ethnic Israel was excommunicated for its apostasy and will never again by God’s Kingdom. They say that the Bible does not tell of any future plan for Israel as a special nation.

THE NEW JERUSALEM – Most preterists believe that this is the Church, both now and forever!

ARMAGEDDON – Preterists believe that it is simply a symbol of defeat and desolation. They teach that there never was, nor will be, a literal “Battle of Armageddon” and that there is no such place.

These viewpoints are merely a sampling of what one finds in the literature of those committed to “Replacement Theology.” Our beliefs about prophecy are totally different! We believe that there are specific future events that will take place on this planet, and that GOD HAS NEVER FORSAKEN ISRAEL, and that He will fulfill all of His promises and covenants to her.

PALESTINIAN ARABS

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Because of our support of God’s covenant and promises to Israel, many folks think that we care nothing about the Palestinian Arabs. Not true. God’s love reaches all people, and the Savior Who was born in Bethlehem came with “good news” for ALL people!

Just for the record, over one million Arabs are full citizens of the modern State of Israel. There are Arabs who are members of the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament. Before the Intifada started in the fall of 2000 AD, thousands of Arabs also crossed the borders of Israel to go to work – jobs were available to many Arabs. Medical attention was also readily available.

Another interesting fact is that over half of the Arabs in the Middle East are “Christians” at least by way of profession and background. The Arabs are descendants of the 12 sons of Ishmael, and they received a blessing from the LORD GOD of Israel. The mother of the Arabs was an Egyptian by the name of Hagar. Abraham is the father of the Arabs as surely as he is the father of the children of Israel. The Bible teaches in Romans 4 that Abraham is the father of “all who believe” – whether they are Jewish or Gentile.

There are now over 100 Jewish Messianic Congregations in Israel. Some of them are led by Arabs who serve as “shepherds” to both Jews and Arabs.

The late Yassir Arafat was an Egyptian. From a technical and historical standpoint, Egyptians come from Ham’s son “Mizraim (the Hebrew word for Egypt)” and are not Arab descendants in a technical sense. However, it was an Egyptian woman who gave birth to Ishmael who fathered the 12 sons who produced the descendants we call “Arabs” today.

Mohammed was a direct descendant of the tribe of Kedar, the second son of Ishmael. The religion of Islam was not the original religion of the Arab peoples of the Middle East, but through conquest, Islam adopted the pre-Islamic Arab culture of the Middle East as their own. The truth is that Arabs are not treated very well by Muslims. The Islamic “takeover” over the Palestinian Arabs is well known. A “Palestinian Arab” is a true Arab who lives in the land of Israel, known since the 2nd century AD as “Palestine,” a name given to it by Emperor Hadrian of Rome at the time of the Second Jewish Revolt under Bar Kochba.

From a technical and historical point of view – the following countries are NOT Arab – Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and even Saudi Arabia. Today Islam has achieved the goal of convincing media personnel that the word “Arab” means “Islam” or “Muslim” and vice versa. That is not true, but nobody seems to want the truth these days! However, Arab peoples and true descendants of Ishmael live and roam about in most of the Middle Eastern countries that are Islamic in government and religion.

Bethlehem was once an Arab Christian town with 85% Christians and about 10-15% Muslim. Today, it is completely the opposite. The Muslim population of Bethlehem is now around 85% and only 15% of the people are Christians. Most of the Arab Christians have gone to Israel or other countries of the world.

The Palestinian Authority is under the control of Islam. It is rooted in terrorism and hatred toward the State of Israel. The terrorist organization founded by the late Yassir Arafat in 1974 – known as “Fatah” is still controlled by one of the original terrorists who partnered with Arafat – he is now the President – Abu Mazen.

There is no Palestinian language, culture, history, etc. The Palestinian State that is being proposed today is a tactic and project of Islamic terrorism, and its ultimate goal is the destruction of the State of Israel. Nothing has changed in the efforts and talk about having peace. Islam is committed to the killing of the Jewish people and it permeates all of their literature.

However, we have many friends who are “Palestinian Arabs” and they need our prayers and support. They are intimidated daily by Islamic control and domination of their lives. They are afraid to say anything, and must be careful about all they think, say, and do. It is a very tense situation.

We don’t hate Arabs – we love the Arab peoples of the Middle East and pray for their safety and their salvation. Thanks for listening.
