BABYLON

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

For some reason, Babylon has become of great interest to both religious and secular journalists the past few weeks. The American military has destroyed some of its buildings and monuments and offered an apology to the Iraqi government this week. For Bible students, the subject of Babylon remains of great interest due to its prevalence in Biblical history and prophecy. Here is an outline for you to ponder.

Subject: “THE HISTORY OF BABYLON”
Scripture: Genesis 10:8-10; 11:1-9

Babylon is mentioned 286 times in the Bible of which 12 usages are found in the NT, six of those in the book of Revelation. The word “Babel” is used twice – Genesis 10:10 and 11:9. Most of these references are referring to the massive and beautiful city of the Neo-Babylonian period (625-539 BC). With its “Hanging Gardens” and massive walls it has been regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” The Greek historian Herodotus (484-425 BC) reported upon visiting the site that its splendor surpassed any city of the known world.

It was also the capital of the 18th century BC King Hammurabi, and was known throughout history as a great center of culture and religion. It was Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC) who brought Babylon to its glory as it was called “The Palace of Heaven and Earth, the Seat of Kingship.” In Daniel 4:30 Nebuchadnezzar boasted “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?”

Ancient Babylon covered an area of 1000 acres making it the largest city of the ancient world, some 15% larger than Ninevah. It had 1179 temples and a population of over 100,000 but could easily have handled over 250,000 people. The famous “Ishtar Gate” was 70 feet high and its arched opening 15 feet wide. Babylon’s most significant temple was Esagila (“the temple that raises its head”) and was supposedly the home of the god Marduk. According to cuneiform documents the temple was surrounded by an enclosure of about 1410 feet by 720 feet and housed over 50 other temples and shrines. Interesting comment by Jeremiah (50:38): “it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.” Over 6000 figures (idols) were uncovered in the excavations of ancient Babylon and over 10 major altars. There were 180 open-air shrines for Ishtar and 200 identifiable places for other deities.

Adjacent to the temple of Esagila was the tower or ziggurat named Etemenanki called “the foundation house of heaven and earth.” It measured about 300 feet square at the base and rose in seven stages to a height of 300 feet. It could very well have been reconstructed and restored from the original “Tower of Babel” mentioned in Genesis 11. The Babylonians believed it was built by the gods.

NOTICE SEVEN THINGS ABOUT THE BIBLICAL ORIGIN OF THIS CITY:

1A. IT WAS A RESULT OF AN ATTEMPT TO ESTABLISH A KINGDOM THAT WOULD REBEL AGAINST GOD’S AUTHORITY – Genesis 10:8-10

1B. The PERSON behind this effort – “Nimrod”
His name means “to revolt” or “to rebel”
His wife:”Semiramis” – the first high priestess
of the Babylonian mystery religion.

2B. The POWER which he exercised – “mighty
one in the earth” and “a mighty hunter before
(or against) the LORD.”

3B. The PROJECT he undertook – “and the
beginning of his kingdom was Babel”

2A. IT WAS A REBELLION AGAINST THE COMMAND OF THE LORD – Genesis 9:1; 11:4 cf. Deut. 1:26 – “but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God”

3A. IT WAS A REVOLT AGAINST THE WORSHIP OF THE LORD – Genesis 11:4 –
“let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven” – cf. Genesis 4:3-5; 8:20-21

The Lord wants altars of sacrifice, not towers of
human achievement! (Note: 24 ziggurats have
remains still standing in the Mesopotamian
valley.

4A. IT WAS A RESPONSE ROOTED IN PRIDE AND THE GLORIFICATION OF MAN – v. 4 – “let us make us a name”

5A. IT WAS A REMINDER OF GOD’S CONTROL AND SOVEREIGNTY OVER ALL THE EVENTS OF HUMAN HISTORY – Genesis 11:5-8 cf. Psalm 103:19; 135:6; Daniel 2:21

1B. It reminds us of God’s knowledge of all that
humanity does – v. 5 – “the LORD came down
to see the city and the tower, which the children
of men builded.”

2B. It reminds us of God’s majesty – “let US go
down” – the tri-unity of God!

3B. It reminds us of God’s power – v. 7 –
“confound their language that they may not
understand one another’s speech”

NOTE: In mythology (Sumerian 3rd dynasty of UR) – it says that people once spoke one language until ENKI, the Sumerian god of wisdom, confounded their speech!

4B. It reminds us of God’s purposes – vv. 8-9
“so the LORD scattered them abroad from
thence upon the face of all the earth”

6A. IT WAS A REASON FOR BELIEVERS TO RESIST ALL ATTEMPTS TO ESTABLISH A WORLD GOVERNMENT AND RELIGION WITHOUT THE MESSIAH – cf. Isaiah 13:1, 6-13, 19

7A. IT IS A REALIZATION THAT SALVATION IS BASED ON FAITH IN THE MESSIAH, NOT UPON MAN-MADE RELIGION AND HUMAN WORKS – Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5

I WILL PLANT THEM IN THEIR OWN LAND!

“I WILL PLANT THEM UPON THEIR LAND”
Amos 9:1-15

THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF ESCAPING THE JUDGMENT OF THE LORD – 9:1-4

1. The POSITION of the Lord – 1a
“I saw the Lord standing upon the altar”
cf. Genesis 32:30; Isaiah 6:1ff

NOTE: Interestingly, it was Jeroboam I who led the ten northern tribes into idolatry with the golden calves at Dan and Bethel who (unlike other kings) performed the services at the altar and “stood by the altar to burn incense” – I Kings 12:32-33; 13:1.

The counterfeit is replaced by the real!

2. The PICTURE of the coming judgment – 1b
“Smite the lintel of the door that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them”

cf. Isaiah 6:4 – “and the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried”

3. The PURSUIT of the Lord in bringing His judgment upon them – 1c
“and I will slay the last of them with the sword; he hath fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.”

4. The PROBLEM of trying to hide from the coming judgment of the Lord – 2-4
(five illustrations – indicated by the word “though”)

a. There is no place where you can hide
(hell, heaven, Carmel, bottom of sea, or in captivity)

b. There is no possibility of escaping the hand or power of the Lord – 2
“Mine hand” “I will bring them down” v. 3 – “I will search and take them out “I command the serpent” v. 4 – “I command the sword” cf. Psalm 139:7-12

5. The PURPOSE of the Lord will not be thwarted or stopped – 4b
“and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good”

THE INABILITY OF ANYONE FACING THE POWER OF THE LORD – 9:5-6

1. His true IDENTITY should make that obvious – 6
“the Lord GOD of hosts”

“The LORD is His name” Hebrew: adonai yahveh sabioth

NOTE: Nine times Amos calls God “the LORD of hosts” – A. W. Tozer said:
“The essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him.”

2. His continual INVOLVEMENT in His creation and His control should tell us of His enormous power!
“he that toucheth…buildeth… founded…calleth…poureth”

THE ILLUSTRATION OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE LORD – 9:7
“Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt?”
But, he must now regard them as the nations around them.

NOTE: An historical act (exodus from Egypt) of God can become a means of blessing but does not ever of itself convey the blessing.

THE INTENT OF THE LORD TOWARD HIS PEOPLE – 9:8-10

1. He will PUNISH the sinful kingdom
“the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom”
Heb. 4:13

2. He will PRESERVE the remnant of His people
“I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob”

3. He will PURIFY
“I will sift the house of Israel among the nations”

4. He will PROTECT the godly remnant
“yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth”

5. He will PROVE that He is a God of judgment and righteousness – 10
“All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword”

THE INTENT OF GOD FOR ISRAEL – AMOS 9:11-15
“in that day”

1. The PLACE of worship will be rebuilt – Amos 9:11

2. God’s PROMISE to David will be fulfilled!

NOTE: On the basis of this verse the Rabbis of the Talmud called the Messiah “Bar Naphli” (the son of the fallen). Read Acts 15:13-18.

3. God’s POWER will accomplish it!
“will I raise up…and close up” “I will build it as in the days of old”

4. The POSSESSION of the nations will be fulfilled! Amos 9:12
“which are called by My name” “the remnant of Edom”
Jordan will be back in the hands of Israel – Jacob and Esau will be re-united!

5. Agricultural PRODUCTIVITY will be amazing – Amos 9:13
“Behold, the days come”

6. The Jewish PEOPLE will return from captivity – Amos 9:14
“I will bring again the captivity of My people”

7. The PROMISE of God will never allow them to be uprooted from their land Amos 9:15

“I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.”

In spite of their sin and unbelief, God will be faithful to his promises!

TERRORISM AND A NEW KNESSET

Monday, April 17th, 2006

The new Parliament of Israel will be sworn in this week in an impressive ceremony. Out of the 120 seats in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) 41 are new members. President Moshe Katsav will address them and warn them about plans to remove Jewish citizens from the Biblical heartlands of Judea and Samaria.

A place is provided in the ceremonies (though empty) to honor Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (incapcitated by a coma) in the proceedings. The decision to release him from his duties was made last week. Our prayers are still with him and his family during this most difficult time. The oldest member of the Knesset, Shimon Peres (83 years old), will stand in as an “Acting Prime Minister” for these formalities.

But, in spite of these dramatic and official events, the terrorism continues. A female suicide bomber blew herself up and killed several people and wounded many others at a “fast-food” stand in Tel Aviv. The nation was immediately put on a “full alert” as responsibility for the attack was claimed by Al Aqsa Martyes Brigade and Islamic Jihad. Israeli officials are concerned that further attacks will be attempted to ruin the official celebrations of installing a new Israeli Parliament this week.

Israel MUST stop their belief that it is possible to negotiate with its enemies who are committed to their annihilation and destruction. Israel MUST return in faith and repentance to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Israel MUST stop giving away the land which God gave to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by an “EVERLASTING COVENANT (Genesis 17:7-8; Psalm 105:8-11).” The failed peace processes are a continual reminder that peace will not come by violating God’s eternal and unconditional covenant! It is time for Israel (weary and discouraged with it all!) to say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” It is time for Bible believers scattered throughout this world to stand up for Israel and to pray earnestly for them in these difficult times. The hope of the world remains the same as the Bible has taught – THE COMING OF THE PRINCE OF PEACE – THE MESSIAH OF ISRAEL!

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BIBLE

Friday, April 7th, 2006

In the last few weeks the media of our culture has been promoting doubts and questions about the historicity and authenticity of the Bible. Much of this is being caused by the marketing techniques associated with the “DA VINCI CODE” movie which is scheduled to be released on May 19 worldwide. There has also been an effort to insinuate a “conspiracy” regarding certain “books” that were written in the early centuries of church history that were not included in the Bible that was confirmed by church councils and universally read in the churches. After compiling several questions, we decided to answer them with a clear “YES” or “NO” for our readers. Here are the questions:

1. Was Jesus ever married? NO!

2. Was Mary Magdalene the wife of Jesus? NO!

3. Did Jesus have any children? NO!

4. Did Jesus use Judas to “set up” the trial and crucifixion? NO!

5. Is it true that Judas never betrayed Jesus? NO!

6. Was there a conspiracy by the Roman Catholic Church to eliminate the “truth” about Jesus? NO!

7. Was the crucifixion a “plot” by Jesus and His disciples? NO!

8. Was the story of the resurrection a hoax and fabrication? NO!

9. Was “DA VINCI” the last name of the famous painter of the Last Supper – Leonardo? NO! (it refers to the place from where he came)

10. Is the “feminine-looking” person sitting next to Jesus in the painting of the Last Supper really Mary Magdalene instead of John? NO!

11. Were “other books” written in the early centuries of church history that claim “Divine” revelation? YES!

12. Should these “other books” be considered of equal value with the Bible? NO!

13. Did the church councils of the 4th & 5th centuries make up the list of books and purposely eliminate certain volumes in a massive “cover-up” scheme of the truth about Jesus? NO!

14. Was Jesus a “Palestinian Arab”? NO!

15. Did Jesus ever claim to be the promised Messiah? YES!

16. Did the disciples of Jesus spread “rumors” and “lies” about His resurrection in order to influence people? NO!

17. Does the Bible claim to be a “direct revelation” from God? YES!

18. Does the Bible claim to be a “final” written revelation from God? YES!

19. Are other religious books also “divine revelations” from God? NO!

20. Is everything in the Bible in terms of history absolutely true and accurate? YES!

Be aware that the onslaught of questioning the Bible’s historicity and authenticity is going to intensify. It is coming from Satan, and its motive is to deceive and to eliminate confidence in the Bible as the true and only written Word of God!

PASSOVER AND UNLEAVENED BREAD

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Subject: “PASSOVER AND
UNLEAVENED BREAD”
Scripture: Exodus 12:15-20; 13:6-7

1A. THE DEMAND TO EAT ONLY UNLEAVENED
BREAD

1B. The COMMAND is clear!
Exodus 12:15 – “Seven days shall ye eat
unleavened bread”
Exodus 23:15 – “Thou shalt keep the feast of
unleavened bread…as I commanded thee”

2B. The CONSEQUENCE for not doing it is also
very clear!
Exodus 12:15b – “for whosoever eateth
leavened bread from the first day until the
seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from
Israel” cf. v. 19b – adds “whether he be a
stranger, or born in the land”

3B. The COMMITMENT to do this lasts forever!
Exodus 12:17 – “therefore shall ye observe this
day in your generations by an ordinance for
ever”

4B. The CLEARING OUT of leaven from your
house is also commanded!
Exodus 12:19 – “Seven days shall there be no
leaven found in your houses”
Exodus 12:20 – “in all your habitations shall ye
eat unleavened bread”
Exodus 13:7 – “there shall no leavened bread be
seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven
seen with thee in all thy quarters”

5B. The COMMENTARY on why it should be
done – Deuteronomy 16:3 – “that thou mayest
remember the day when thou camest forth out
of the land of Egypt – all the days of thy life”

6B. The CHARACTERISTIC of the people when
eating unleavened bread – II Chronicles 30:21
“and the children of Israel…kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with great
gladness”
Ezra 6:22 – “and kept the feast of unleavened
bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful”

2A. THE DANGER OF LEAVEN

1B. It is a SUBSTANCE that affects all that it
touches – (fermentation)
I Corinthians 5:6 – “your glorying is not good.
Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the
whole lump?”
Galatians 5:9 – “a little leaven leaveneth the
whole lump”

The Talmud says that “leaven represents the
evil impulse of the heart” (Berachot 17a)

2B. It is a SYMBOL of that which is sinful

1C. It symbolized the teaching of the Pharisees
and Sadducees – Matthew 16:5-12;
Mark 8:15 – “and of the leaven of Herod”

2C. It symbolizes hypocrisy – Luke 12:1

3C. It symbolizes malice and wickedness –
I Corinthians 5:8

3A. THE DESCRIPTION OF UNLEAVENED BREAD AS IT RELATES TO THE PHYSICAL BODY OF OUR LORD YESHUA
Luke 22:19 – “This is My body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me”

I Corinthians 10:16 – “The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?”

I Corinthians 17:24 – “Take, eat; this is My body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of Me”

I Corinthians 17:26 – “For as often as ye eat this bread…ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come”

1B. It POINTS to His physical body – “This is My body”

2B. It PROCLAIMS His death – “My body, which is broken for you” and “the bread which we break”

3B. It PROMOTES the fellowship of believers one with another – “the bread which we break is the communion (fellowship) of the Body of Christ”

4B. It PRESENTS the need of faith – “as often as ye eat this bread”
“O taste and see…”

5B. It POSITIONS Him in a place of equality with the Father and the Holy Spirit
(three pieces of matza on the Passover table)

NOTE: Judaism says that it represents the priests, Levites, and Israelites; others say that it comes from Genesis 18:6 when Abraham told Sarah to make “three measures” of unleavened bread for the three guests who came to his tent. In addition to the two angels who then went on to Sodom, the third guest stayed behind and talked with Abraham – Genesis 18:22 says “but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.” Verse 33 says “And the LORD went His way, as soon as He had left communing with Abraham.”

6B. It PROPAGATES the truth of His sinlessness –
“no leaven” – II Corinthians 5:21 – “Who knew
no sin” and Hebrews 4:15 – “yet without sin”

7B. It PICTURES His suffering for us

1C. The stripes He suffered – Isaiah 53:5 –
“with His stripes we are healed”

NOTE: The meaning of Isaiah 53:5 is clearly presented in I Peter 2:24 – “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by Whose stripes ye were healed”

The healing is referring to the cleansing of our sins. This is not the passage to use for physical healing.

2C. The spear He received in His side –

NOTE: The prophecy of Zechariah 12:10 – “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me Whom they have pierced”
John 19:34 – “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water” and John 19:36-37 – “For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled….They shall look on Him Whom they pierced”

I Corinthians 5:8 – “Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
